George Roy, Sr. founded Roy’s Shoe Repair Shop in 1923 on Steven’s Avenue in Portland.

His son, George Roy, Jr., worked with him and eventually took over the business, hiring a young man named Steve Lentz in 1956.

Roy, Jr. sold the business to Steve in 1981 and it’s been in the Lentz’s hands ever since.

Steve’s sons, Michael and Daniel, shined shoes in the 60’s and 70s as little side jobs (thDan & Steve Lentzey were in their teens then).

Michael eventually opened a store in Scarborough in the 80’s.

Dan’s been working hard at the Portland store for over 30 years now.

Although Steve is 76 years old and retired now, he comes by almost every day. “I let him do what he wants,” says Dan.
